In early 2018, Sky Mavis created Axie Infinity, one of the most influential crypto games in the world. Axie Infinity’s overall design is inspired by well-known video games like Pokémon and Tamagotchi. The main objective is to breed, fight and collect the adorable little creatures known as Axies, and since this is an NFT-based online game, it also enables players to earn crypto-currencies. Axie Infinity uses a play-to-earn business model on the Ethereum and Ronin blockchains. Simply put, every reward you get in Axie Infinity can be exchanged for tangible crypto assets.
How does it work
Axie Infinity’s players can own, purchase, sell, and trade the resources they acquire in the game through skillful gameplay. By resources, we mean SLPs (Smooth Love Potions), which is the in-game token. You can obtain them by regularly logging in, finishing your daily quests, and succeeding in PvP battles.
Another major part of Axie Infinity is AXS, short for Axie Infinity Shards. These are the game’s governance tokens, which are common in web3 games. The tokens can be staked, which means they can gradually produce more tokens over a certain period of time, or you can purchase other Axies and other products in the in-game marketplace.

Gameplay mechanics
Axie Infinity features two game modes: a PvP mode and an Adventure mode with P2E battles.

Adventure mode
After completing a level in the adventure mode, you proceed to the next level, and each level is a little bit harder than the one before. Additionally, for each task you complete, your Axies naturally gain XP.
You need Energy points to participate in the PvP battles and adventure levels. You receive 20 EP’s every day, but you can still play even if you run out of Energy Points, although you won’t receive any XP. As mentioned above, you also receive a limited number of SLP per day, and the amount of SLP awarded increases as the level becomes more difficult.
PvP mode
Most players favor the PvP mode because it requires skill utilization, has ranks, and is more beneficial for the player.
The concept is pretty simple. Your Axies fight against your opponent’s Axies in a 3v3 battle. You receive four skill cards randomly for each Axie. Each card has Attack points and Shield (defense points). There are also status effects (Buffs and Debuffs) that affect your Axie positively or negatively. This is where your skills get tested, so be prepared before you enter these battles.
Summary

Like many games on the market, Axie Infinity has its pros and cons, but if you are interested in blockchain games, it is a game you should check out. The gameplay is compelling and addictive, and many players consider it an excellent investment.
On the other hand, some experts think that Axie Infinity never fulfilled its true potential, and nowadays, it’s not the game it once was due to its turbulent period in 2022. So if you are interested in playing and investing in Axie Infinity, your decision has to be backed by extensive research. Whether Axie Infinity will rise again or not, one thing is for sure, NFT games will have an important role in the future of gaming.
